The do's and don'ts of Valentine's Day Gifts
Valentine’s Day is a time to show the person you love how much they mean to you. But often February 14th is hampered by the fear of getting gifts and plans wrong!
So at The Personalised Gift Shop, we’ve put our heads together to highlight the top do’s and don'ts for Valentine’s Day and steer you in the right direction! Of course you can’t go wrong with one of our personalised gifts but what else can you do to make the day memorable….
The biggest (and probably best known) of all Valentine sins is buying a bunch of flowers from the petrol station the night before Valentine’s Day.
To cut a long story short, you would probably be better off not making any gesture at all rather than buying a bunch of wilted flowers. It’s got “I completely forgot and only realised when it was too late to get you something decent!” written all over it.
Not only that, but if your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife has put a lot of thought into a special gift for you, your fume-fed flowers are going to look even worse than they did when you bought them. Personalised gifts from our fantastic range are bound to receive a better reception!
Don’t assume your other half feels the same way about Valentine’s Day as you do.
This of course goes both ways.
If you’re cutting out confetti hearts to sprinkle everywhere come February 14th but they have a strong hatred of anything mushy, this is going to cause some definite awkwardness between the two of you.
Either your other half will have to pretend they love what you’ve done while holding back mushy behaviour-inspired rage, or they’re going to flat out tell you that they don’t like big shows of affection before those confetti hearts have even hit the floor.
On the other hand, you could be left scowling if they make a great romantic gesture that just makes you cringe.
It’s definitely worth finding out how the other person feels about Valentine’s Day and put few hints out there about your own feelings.
If your other half has made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight and they’ve stuck to it, it would be very unwise (and cruel) to buy a great big box of chocolates.
Firstly, you’re testing their will power to the limit by dangling some wonderful chocolates they have said they mustn’t have right in front of their nose. But more importantly it suggests you haven’t been paying the slightest bit of attention to their efforts to get trim and healthy, and trust us, you don’t want to go down the “you haven’t been listening” road!
Do consult your other half with ideas for something to do.
If it’s your first Valentine’s Day together, you’re probably unsure what they’d like to do. While it can be really romantic to surprise your other half by booking a restaurant, it could hugely backfire for several reasons.
Imagine you booked a restaurant which turns out to be the same place that your boyfriend or girlfriend went with their ex every Valentine’s Day for the last five years? That would be very awkward.
Or maybe you’ve decided to treat them to a meal somewhere completely different, only to discover they hate it with a passion.
By all means, if you are confident your surprise will go down a treat, go for it. But if you have doubts, it’s always a better move to try and find out a little bit about what they’d like to do.
Do think outside the box and be a little bit different! It’s easy to think of Valentine’s Day and immediately assume a fancy and romantic meal is the only way to celebrate.
But why not think of some other things you and your other half enjoy? Go ice skating, go to the cinema, or even try something completely different such as quad biking!
We think doing something different is a great way to get to know someone new, but it’s also perfect for couples who have been together a long time and are looking to spend Valentine’s Day a little differently.
Of course, tread carefully here and make sure it’s something you’re both going to enjoy!
