7 facts about Father's Day we bet you didn't know
Father’s Day is accepted in most countries around the world as a celebration of our dads on the third Sunday of June every year.
But how did this special day come to be?
1. Father’s Day was invented in America by a woman who wanted to celebrate and honour her dad.
Sonora Smart Dodd’s father, William Jackson Smart, was a single parent and a war veteran who had managed to raise six children, and she wanted to celebrate his hard work and dedication.
Sonora had heard at a church service about the newly-formed Mother’s Day and decided that fathers should have recognition for their hard work as well.
She approached the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and asked if Father’s Day could be on June 5, her father’s birthday. But it was eventually decided that Father’s Day should be on the third Sunday in June.
The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 10, 1910 in Spokane, Washington.
2. The idea of a day for father’s didn’t go down very well in America at first.
Despite Sonora’s success in raising awareness of the recognition fathers should have too, the idea of a day for them wasn’t taken very seriously to begin with.
Many people found the idea of celebrating a Father’s work laughable and one newspaper reportedly claimed it would lead to other ‘mindless’ celebrations.
3. It wasn’t until 1972 in America that President Richard Nixon made the third Sunday in June officially Father’s Day by signing the public law.
This made Father’s Day a permanent celebration on the third Sunday in June by law, 62 years after the first Father’s Day had been celebrated in America.
Mother’s Day had been approved by the then president Woodrow Wilson in 1913, so it was regarded as an official holiday in America for decades while Father’s Day, despite the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd, continued to be viewed as an event to generate sales rather than a holiday to celebrate dads.
4. The rose is the official flower for Father’s Day and traditionally the gift was red or white roses.
It is thought a red rose was to represent a living father, while a white rose traditionally represented a father who had passed away.
5. The date set for Father’s Day isn’t the same across the world. In Australia Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in September, while in Thailand the date for Father’s Day is always the same date as the king’s birthday.
In Portugal and Spain the day to celebrate fathers is St Joseph’s Day on March 19.
6. Americans spend more than Brits on their dads!
According to a survey from 2013, Americans spent more on their dads compared to us in the UK.
The average spend per person in the US was £77.02, while in the UK the average dad had around £14.45 spent on him!
7. The Father’s Day we know is not the first celebration of fathers to have happened.
It was reportedly first celebrated by a Babylonian youth around 4,000 years ago.
The youngster, called Elmesu, carved a Father’s Day card out of clay which apparently was to wish his father good health and long life.
